Fatal Rosamond Crash Claims Two Lives
Two Killed in Rosamond Intersection Crash at West Avenue A and 70th Street West
Overview of the Incident
On Wednesday afternoon, December 10, 2025, two Rosamond residents—Richard Madril Diaz, 80, and his passenger, Maria De Jesus Zuniga Rivas, 65—were tragically killed in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of West Avenue A and 70th Street West. According to initial reports from the California Highway Patrol and the Kern County Coroner's Office, the crash occurred at approximately 3:27 p.m. as a Honda traveling southbound on 70th Street West entered the intersection and collided with a Jeep traveling eastbound on Avenue A.
Diaz and Rivas were pronounced deceased at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. The Jeep's driver was transported to Antelope Valley Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Authorities have stated that impairment does not appear to have been a factor. The circumstances remain under active investigation, including the sequence of right-of-way and any roadway, mechanical, or environmental contributors. Public reports indicate the collision was reported by local media, including KGET, based on information from CHP and county officials.
Understanding the Risks at Rural Intersections
Rural intersections like Avenue A and 70th Street West can be uniquely hazardous for drivers in Kern County and the Antelope Valley region. Common features include long, straight stretches of roadway, higher speed limits, and intersections controlled by stop signs on one or more approaches—sometimes without traffic signals. These conditions can create several risks:
- Approach speed and visibility: Drivers may approach intersections at 55 mph or more, reducing reaction time and increasing impact severity if a vehicle enters the crossing path.
- Sight-line limitations: Graded shoulders, roadside vegetation, utility structures, or dips/crests can restrict line of sight to cross traffic, making it harder to gauge the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles.
- Sun glare and lighting transitions: In winter months, afternoon sun angles can cause significant glare along east-west corridors. While investigators will determine any role in this crash, sun position and long shadows are routinely examined in rural intersection collisions.
- Stop-control confusion: Two-way stop configurations can lead to misjudgments about which driver has the right-of-way, especially when multiple vehicles approach simultaneously.
The loss of Richard Madril Diaz and Maria De Jesus Zuniga Rivas is a heartbreaking tragedy for their families and the Rosamond community. Fatal crashes at rural intersections leave loved ones grappling not only with grief, but with unanswered questions about how such a devastating collision could occur.
