Fatal Head-On Collision on SR-14 Near Backus Road Claims Life of Los Angeles Man

A tragic head-on collision on Sunday night, December 14, 2025, claimed the life of 35-year-old John Anthony Johnson of Los Angeles and left another driver with moderate to major injuries in Kern County. The crash occurred at approximately 9:28 p.m. on northbound State Route 14, just north of Backus Road. According to preliminary reports, Mr. Johnson was driving a white Chevrolet Malibu southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle made an unsafe movement to the left, left the roadway, crossed the dirt center median, and entered the northbound lanes. The Malibu then collided head-on with a blue Mercedes-Benz traveling in the number one lane.

Emergency responders arrived to find significant damage to both vehicles and reports of occupants trapped, prompting immediate rescue efforts and traffic control. Mr. Johnson sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was transported for medical treatment of injuries described as moderate to major. Multiple lanes were closed as authorities managed the scene, coordinated with roadway crews, and began investigating the circumstances leading to the crash. The California Highway Patrol has indicated that the cause remains under investigation.

Understanding Head-On Collisions and Median Crossovers

Head-on collisions are among the most severe types of roadway crashes due to the combined speeds and direct force of impact. National data consistently show that while head-on crashes account for a relatively small percentage of total collisions, they are responsible for a disproportionately high number of traffic fatalities. Median crossovers—where a vehicle crosses a center median into opposing traffic—can occur on divided highways without continuous barrier protection or when a vehicle loses control due to speed, distraction, impairment, mechanical failure, or sudden evasive maneuvers.

The death of John Anthony Johnson is a devastating loss for his family, friends, and community. Head-on collisions—especially those involving median crossovers—often leave loved ones with profound grief and difficult questions about how such a tragedy could occur.
