What Investigators May Examine
Serious freeway crashes—especially those involving ejections—typically prompt comprehensive investigations. While this inquiry is ongoing, investigators commonly evaluate:
- Restraint usage: Whether each child was properly restrained in age-appropriate car seats or booster seats. Child ejections often signal issues with restraint usage, installation, compatibility, or failure.
- Speed and vehicle dynamics: Sudden loss of control may involve speed relative to conditions, tire condition, or evasive maneuvers.
- Roadway and weather conditions: The I-5 corridor over the Grapevine can see high winds, sudden temperature drops, wet pavement, debris, and visibility challenges—particularly during winter holiday travel.
- Impairment or distraction: Whether alcohol, drugs, fatigue, or distraction played a role.
- Vehicle and equipment defects: Investigators may check for defective seat belts
